The basic purpose behind portraying the bad facets of Malfoy was to make Harry’s characteristics desirable. The trick was when you would get furious with Malfoy’s poor attitude, you would start to like Harry more and more.
From the beginning to the end, Malfoy discriminated against people based on class and stature. He treated Ron wrongly only because the latter didn’t belong to a rich and high-class family.
